The Tathra Wharf to Waves is Back in 2027!

Get ready to dive into the triumphant return of the Tathra Wharf 2 Waves, the much celebrated ocean swim that unites locals and visitors in the heart of the stunning Sapphire Coast.

This iconic swim event invites participants to conquer the stunning waters in a swim from Tathra Beach to the historic Tathra Wharf and back. Renowned nationwide among the ocean swimming community, this event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of family, fun, and community spirit.

Choose your challenge from three epic swim courses:

W2W 1200: Test your endurance on this classic route from Tathra Beach to the historic Tathra Wharf and back.
W2W 600: A shorter, yet equally thrilling swim for participants of all skill levels.
W2W 200: Perfect for our juniors and those looking for a quick, refreshing dip with a competitive edge.

For the little adventurers, the FREE Kids Mud Rats Dash and Splash offers a playful mix of fun, laughter, and excitement, adding a family-friendly spark to the Wharf 2 Waves experience.

Based from the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club, the event offers much more than just an epic swim. Take in breathtaking coastal views, relax on golden sands, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters while savouring delicious food and drinks at the club. Whether you’re swimming, cheering, or simply soaking up the festive atmosphere, there’s something for everyone.

Revived and reimagined through the unwavering passion of the Tathra community and its Surf Lifesaving Club, the Tathra Wharf 2 Waves returns after years of challenges brought by bushfires, floods, and COVID. While the swim can’t begin from the Wharf due to necessary refurbishment, the iconic structure will still serve as a breathtaking backdrop as W2W 1200 swimmers navigate the course from the beach to the Wharf and back. Tathra Beach takes center stage as the thrilling start and finish line of the event, buzzing with a vibrant festival atmosphere that promises excitement for athletes and visitors alike.

This revival stands as a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of a cherished tradition.

This is an ocean swim off the coastline from beautiful Tathra Beach.

COURSE MAP

SWIM CONDITIONS AND WATER TEMPERATURE

The swimming season in Tathra lasts from December to May. During those months, Tathra water temperature usually does not drop below 20°C. The average water temperature in Tathra in March is 21.3°C and therefore suitable for comfortable swimming.

Waves average 1.5 m along most of the beach, dropping slightly in the south.

WATER CLARITY

Water clarity at Tathra beach is generally very good, however, this can change depending on conditions on the day.

SWIM START

The start of the swim will be from the sandy shores of beautiful Tathra Beach.

Swimmers will start in Wave Starts from the beach. Times for each age group start will be displayed on the notice board at registration. Please be sure to check these times and be at the start line with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere before the start of your wave.

The start will be a running start from the sandy beach into the water.

SWIM COURSE

The swim course follows a rectangular, clockwise loop marked by 1.5m orange buoys for clear navigation.

Swimmers will start from Tathra Beach, heading straight out while keeping the first three buoys on their right shoulder. As they approach the third buoy, the iconic Tathra Wharf comes into view—a stunning sight for participants.

Upon reaching the Wharf, W2W 1200 swimmers will round the buoy before beginning their return journey to the golden sands of Tathra Beach, completing this exhilarating open-water challenge.

SWIM FINISH

Your swim concludes with an epic exit onto the golden sands of Tathra Beach, just steps from the Surf Life Saving Club. A final dash up the beach takes you to the Finish Line, where a roaring crowd awaits to celebrate your victorious moment in true Wharf 2 Waves style!

Wather Safety will be provided by the dedicated team from Tathra Surf Life Saving Club

CONTINGENCY PLANS

On event morning, the team from Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club will assess the currents and weather to ensure the best experience for swimmers. In the unlikely event where ocean conditions make the swim unsafe, the event will seamlessly transition to the beautiful Mogareeka Inlet, just 3km north of the Surf Lifesaving Club—a stunning alternative location that guarantees a safe and unforgettable experience for all participants.

W2W FREE Kids Dash & Splash

Get ready for a whirlwind of fun in the FREE Kids Dash and Splash!

Little adventurers will kick things off with a dash down the golden sands of Tathra Beach, splash through the sparkling shallows at the water’s edge, and race back up the beach to a roaring finish. It’s all about big smiles, sandy toes, and endless excitement!

The Wharf 2 Waves Kids Dash & Splash is a free, short, fun, non-competitive run and splash event for our Kids aged 5 to 11 years. If there are any Kids under 5yrs who would like to take part they must be accompanied by an adult (over 18 years of age) around the course.

The kids Dash and Splash will take place on Saturday after the W2W 200 event just before prize giving a Midday.

REGISTER ONLINE

Although this is a free event, participants will be required to register online before the event and complete the online Parental Consent Form.

After completing the online registration please visit Race HQ between 10:45am and 11:15am on the day to collect your tag.

Where the event is not fully subscribed Late Online Entries will open on Wednesday morning after the close of Standard Entries at 5pm on Tuesday prior to the event.

All late entries are required to be completed ONLINE .

Late Online Entries are accepted up until half an hour before the close of event registration on the day of the event.

To ensure fairness and accuracy, prizes can only be collected in person during the prize-giving ceremony. Medals and prizes can not be distributed beforehand, as final standings depend on all competitors finishing and any potential protests being resolved.

Please note: Prizes and medals cannot be collected on behalf of absent participants due to past challenges. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation! 🎉

Requesting Prizes After The Event

If a prize winner is unable to stay for the Prize Giving Ceremony they may organise for their prize and/or token/medallion to be posted to them by contacting the team and sending a registered post bag (no bigger than A5 size for each person) with postage paid to the address below. Prizes and tokens/medallions must be claimed within 4 weeks of the event.

Medallions / Tokens usually weigh between 50-75g and require an A5 satchel
Prizes are usually gift vouchers that will fit in a DL Envelope
Prizes and medallions / tokens are packed away in the event trailer post event. Some events require travel and at times the trailer may not be available to be unpacked for up to 4 weeks post an event. In some circumstances it can take up to this long for prizes and/or medallions to be distributed when participants are unable to stay for prize giving.
Random draw prizes are only applicable for those athletes in attendance at the presentation ceremony on the day.

Safety

Safety & First Aid

Your safety is a key consideration; however, ocean swimming events do involve risk. Dedicated first aiders are on hand at Race HQ and on the course to assist where necessary.

SAFETY RULES

Stop and assist any competitor that is in need of emergency assistance.
Report any incident to SLSC safety personnel.
Compete within your abilities.

Water Safety

During the event Water Safety personnel from Tathra SLSC will be located throughout the course with rescue tubes, board paddlers, a Jet Ski and IRB.

If you require assistance simply raise your arm and our qualified water safety team will be on hand to assist.

On the course there are a number of things you can do to assist yourselves and fellow competitors:

Swim at your own pace, especially at the start of the event.
Avoid contact with other swimmers
Compete within your limits.
Let common sense and courtesy prevail. We want to see you safe and sound at the end of the event.

Top Tips for Open Water Swimming

If this is your first Ocean Swim or if you’d like a few tips to help you on the day here are some practical tips to help you stay safe and enjoy any swim—whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer!

Train where you’ll race
Pool training is great, but nothing beats practicing in open water. Alternate between pool and open water sessions to identify challenges unique to the ocean, like waves and currents, and tackle them head-on!

Hydrate smart
Start hydrating a couple of days before your swim to keep your energy levels up.

Keep your eyes on the prize
Without the trusty black line of a pool, it’s easy to veer off course in open water. Periodically lift your head to sight your target and stay on track. It’ll save you time and energy in the long run

Invest in quality goggles
A snug, comfy pair of goggles can make all the difference. A mid-race goggle adjustment is the last thing you want, so test them out beforehand to ensure a perfect fit.

Master bilateral breathing
Open water swimming often means being surrounded by others. Being able to breathe on either side helps you avoid swallowing waves or clashing arms with nearby swimmers. Practice this skill in the pool to build confidence.

FIRST AID

First Aid will be located at Race HQ and first aid water safety personnel will be lcoated on the water. If you require assistance in the water simply raise your arm and our qualified water safety team will be on hand to assist.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION

In the event of an emergency, follow instructions from water safety personnel.

Wharf to Waves Ocean Swim

Race Rules

These rules are put in place for reasons of fairness, safety, and responsibility; to ensure that all participants involved in the event have a safe and enjoyable race.

You are expected to abide by these rules at all times, ignorance is no excuse and disregard of these rules may result in penalties or disqualification.

Littering is prohibited at all times.
You must complete the course as marked under your own power.
It is your responsibility to follow the correct course.
Taking shortcuts or using any unfair means of obtaining an advantage over other competitors may result in disqualification.
You must cooperate with event officials and obey their directions at all times.
Each Swimmer will be required to wear an Event Timing Chip anklet, this must be securely fastened and worn for the entire event.
Each Swimmer will have their Race Number marked on their Event Swim Cap; this must be worn for the entire event.
Swimwear Policy
1. When the water temperature on race day = 18^oC and above only swimmers not wearing a wetsuit or race suit will be eligible to place overall in the W2W 1,200m Swim.
2. Swimsuits for men shall not extend above the navel nor below the knee.
3. Swimsuits for women shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder nor below the knee.
4. Swimsuits shall be made from textile materials only and no neoprene.

1. Participants may elect to wear a wetsuit to participate in the event.
2. Any swimmer taking part in the W2W 1,200m swim wearing a wetsuit/race suit will not be eligible for overall placings/prizes; they will however be eligible for age category placings and awards.
3. When the water temperature on Race Day is less than 18^oC all participants will be strongly advised to wear a wetsuit. Prizes and awards will be made regardless of who is/isn’t wearing a wetsuit in this circumstance.
Swim Aids
1. Fins/Flippers, Hand Paddles, Gloves may be worn for the event however any swimmer making use of these items must start at the back of the wave start for their course/category and will not be eligible for any awards or prizes.
2. No other swim aids are permissible in the event, this includes but is not limited to flotation devices, boards, etc. The Race Directors decision will be final on the use of any device/aid that is considered outside of the event rules.
Medical Officials from In2Adventure and Tathra SLSC have the authority to remove any competitor from the swim.
Be polite and respectful to other participants during the event.
Races entries are non-transferable on the day. Times and prizes will not be recognised if racing under another person’s entry/name.
Swimmers are expected to assist other participants who are in distress. If you see another swimmer in distress, provide assistance and call for further assistance from lifeguards.
One competitor cannot provide assistance in forward progression through physical pushing / pulling / towing, to a competitor except in emergency circumstances. This must then be reported to the Race Director at the finish, a time penalty may be incurred.
Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify Race HQ. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged.
All athletes must attend the pre-race safety brief. Any athlete who does not attend the brief will not be granted admission to the start line.
In2Adventure reserve the right to discourage and/or penalise any behaviour that is considered unsporting or not in the spirit of the event.
All participants are permitted to lodge protests against results or decisions enforced during the event. A panel of three In2Adventure team members and Tathra SLSC officials will adjudicate on all protests and other contentious matters, and their decision will be final. Protests must be lodged within 30 minutes of the subject competitor crossing the finish line.
Breaking any of the rules or unsportsmanlike behaviour may incur a time penalty, disqualification or pre-race withdrawal. Any such penalties are at the organisers’ discretion and are final.
In2Adventure may at its discretion alter or amend the course, distances, times and/or race rules in order to ensure the safety of participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate, this will be communicated on the event website and via social media.

I’m Sarah, the one who paints all the prints for Piste & Trail! When I’m not the business owner of this fabulous little brand, I work at an award-winning oyster farm on the Far South Coast in which my prints are inspired.

I love to explore the outdoors on foot, wheels, planks or boards and I have a special place in my heart for wildlife encounters, which is where the roots of Piste & Trail have grown from.

Getting Here

GETTING HERE

The Sapphire Coast is located approximately halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, on the far south coast of New South Wales. It stretches from Bermagui in the north to Wonboyn in the south, encompassing the country villages and towns of the Bega Valley Shire.

It is only a 3 hour drive from Canberra via Cooma or a 6-7 hour drive from either Melbourne or Sydney. Flights operate between Merimbula, Sydney & Melbourne.

Fly, drive or catch a bus – there are many options available. Getting to the Sapphire Coast is easy, choosing from the huge range of things to see when you’re here might take some more time!

Trail Run Australia, invites runners to tackle the breathtaking coastal trails stretching between Merimbula and Tathra, offering a spectacular experience through some of the region’s most picturesque landscapes.

With distances to suit every level, from beginners to ultra-runners, this event promises an immersive experience through natural bushland, ocean views, and pristine beaches.

It’s the perfect way to cap off a weekend of adventure and mateship.

The Trail Run Australia course wraps up with an unforgettable finale as runners pass Tathra’s historic wharf and ascend the stunning headland.

At the summit, runners will be welcomed at the newly opened Eat Street Precinct, where a cheering crowd, sweeping 270-degree coastal views, and a vibrant atmosphere await.
